Waldorf Doll Sew Along

Head - Part 2

10. Take the head piece of skin tone knit and wrap it around the doll as shown.  I fold over the edge as in the picture so that there won't be an unfinished edge on the outside of the head.  Make sure to pull this tightly, so that later there won't be extra skin around the chin/neck.  Check it by looking at the front of the head to make sure it's tightening everywhere.  When pulling it tightly and folding over, sometimes I have to snip off some extra so there won't be a wide folded over edge.

11. Pin the back and top of the head like shown.  The top is folded like the end of a wrapped package (if that makes sense).

12.  Sew up back of head.   I start at the bottom of the neck and move up, so that I can continue to sew up the top of the head as well.  For the back of the head, every 3-4 stitches, I take a back stitch, so that when I pull it tight, the seam will stay smooth and it won't pull and gather.

For the top of the head, it's shaped like an "H" and you sew a whip stitch around each leg of the "H" and then through the middle.  Then I pull up very tightly and tie off a couple of times.

13. Here's the finished top of the head, it's pulled tight, so it's a little lumpy - but the wig will cover it.

14. Under the chin, loop cotton string around twice and pull very tightly and tie off.  Make sure you smooth out all wrinkles around the chin and neck.

15. Whip stitch skin tone knit at neck to the head.  I start at the back seam.

16. Pin the location for the eyes and mouth.

17. Making the eyes.  Take your dollmaking needle and thread a long piece of your embroidery floss in your eye color.  Leave one end short and tie a knot in the other end.  Insert the needle the back of the head and come out near the pin, pull slightly tight.  Then on the other side of the pin insert the needle as the #2 picture shows and pull out again near where the first thread came out.  I usually take 3-5 stitches and make a more oval shaped eye, some people do a satin stitch with round eyes, it's really a preference.  On your last stitch insert the needle back to through to the back of the needle and tie off, but do not cut the thread.  You'll insert the needle back through the other side of the head for the second eye and do the same thing.  This is probably one of the hardest parts to perfect, it does take practice to make your stitches look nice.

18. Sew the mouth.  The lips are just like the eyes, except the stitches are longer.  I usually do 2 to 3 stitches to form the mouth.
